A campaign to save the building and to list it as a protected monument was started by the Dutch paper Het Vrije Volk on 23 November 1955. The building was saved by campaigners who staged a protest outside the building on the day of demolition.
As you visit the house and museum, you can see and read all about Anne’s life. I was moved to tears when I stood in the small bedroom that she shared with Fritz Pfeffer, a Jewish dentist. The pale beige wallpaper was stained, and it bore some of the pictures and posters that Anne had pinned on it during her time in The Secret Annex. Here, it is painfully clear that she was like most young girls – interested in movies, sports and fashion. And yet, she would prove to be so unlike any other adolescent. I felt that her room was a sacred space, where voice tones should be, out of respect, only a whisper.
